“We regularly invite Pattacakes Cookery School in to cook with all our year groups . It not only enhances our curriculum provision but the children enjoy it so much.”

Headteacher of St. Nicholas Primary School, Harpenden

Pattacakes schools cooking workshops offer huge cross curriculum learning opportunities as well as a fun and rewarding learning experience for pupils of all ages.  To demonstrate let's take the example of a simple recipe for bread:

  • First the recipe, and its tie in to lots of subject areas

  • The fun cooking bit, where each child makes their own dish from start to finish

Kneading - literally hands on learning

Basic Food Hygiene - washing hands, clean work surfaces, no licking!

Design - round, square, plaited loaves?

Experimenting - individual rolls with extra flavours? - or design your own recipe using preparaton worksheets provided ahead of the session

  • Finally the delicious reward

Your homemade bread to take home and share along with an easy to read recipe

Each Pattacakes Schools Cooking Workshop is tailored for year groups. Food and dishes can be themed for special topics to bring excitement to any subject area eg

  • A literacy theme: Green Eggs and Ham, The Tiger that Came to Tea, The Mad Hatters Tea Party. Cook foods that bring the pages of a story to life
  • Cook for special topics such as Multi Cultural themes, Harvest Time or Art Week.  We can provide sessions to meet your particular brief.

Or perhaps you are running a Healthy Living week? - why not ask us to run cooking sessions around the theme of healthy eating.  We will cover the Eatwell Plate and provide exciting worksheets for the children.

We can provide cookery sessions based on the QCA schemes of work for keystage 1 and 2 covering fruit and vegetables, lunchtime foods, bread or baking. Our sessions also address the FSA core competencies for food education.  As members of DATA (Design and Technology Association for teachers of D&T) we ensure we are at the forefront of new initiatives in this area to ensure that workshops are fully compliant with curriculum developments.

or why not run one of our popular Edible History Workshops

  • Eating nettles like the Vikings
  • Experiencing the taste and smell of Roman fish sauce
  • Tasting World War 2 mock banana
  • We specialise in key stage 1 and 2  history topics, bringing history to life. Add an extra ingredient to a theme day - you ask the children to dress for the period and we'll arrange tasting common foods of the time, handling typical cooking utensils as well as producing a dish.  Specially designed worksheets can be provided to complete the session.

A Pattacakes Schools Cooking Workshop costs from just £5 per child

  • Workshops typically last between 1 and 2 hours
  • Each child cooks their own dish
  • We can teach small or large groups at one time depending on the space and facilities available
  • We have considerable experience of managing the constraints of cooking in primary schools that are not set up for cooking activities.  No cooking facilities - no problem. We can convert a classroom into a cooking area and have a range of dishes that can be taken away by pupils for cooking at home (contact us to discuss the practicalities of this)
  • Special needs, food allergies and intolerances can be catered for

Pattacakes also run workshops for after school clubs and specially designed short, fun sessions for little cooks at preschools

If you would prefer to run your own sessions we run courses for teachers which cover the basic requirements of cooking in the primary school with lots of hints and tips to make it a good learning experience.  We are accredited trainers for the DfE Food in Schools Primary Training initiative.  For more information see Teacher Training
